by Sarah Waisvisz The TACTICS Mainstage Series Presents: A Calalou/RAFT Theatre Projects Production

GCTC requires that all audience members show proof of vaccination status before entering the theatre. This policy extends to the end of the 2021-22 Season. See our COVID-19 Protocols here.

“Heartlines” traces the interaction of love, art, and war as it reimagines the lives of French surrealist and avant-garde artists Lucy Schwob (a.k.a. Claude Cahun) and Suzanne Malherbe (a.k.a. Marcel Moore), who were secretly Jewish, lesbian life partners, active in the French Resistance during the Second World War.

Content note: discussions of the Holocaust and World War Two, Nazi imagery and symbols, sexuality, insinuated violence, discussion of a hate crime that targets LGBTQ+ and Jewish people and discussion of rape and suicide. Use of projections during the show.

There is a surprise prop event late in the show. We’ve included a spoiler description of it below in case you'd rather not be surprised.

  • At one point, the two artists will fly paper airplanes into the audience which is then followed by a release of paper pamphlets over the audience's heads for patrons in rows A to F. They will fall softly like snowflakes.

“Heartlines had its start and its growth with TACTICS and we are honoured to present it on a large stage that can support the wildest dreams of its creators. Claude and Marcel were visionaries and so is Sarah Waisvisz. We couldn’t be happier to see this piece in Ottawa again.”

— Ludmylla Reis, TACTICS Co-Artistic Producer.
