We wanted to support GCTC and looked at the list of names. Many are people we know and deeply respect. Others we had never heard of. But it seemed almost none actually commemorated and named someone whose work or performance actually took place at the GCTC.

That led to an exciting moment of clarity! Wouldn’t it be more appropriate and satisfying, if the name on the plaque was, instead of a recognition of our financial capacity to be a generous supporter of GCTC, a recognition of real, hopefully lasting, dramatic artistic achievement? The answer was obvious. In that spirit, we donated enough for two seats – not with our names on them, but each for an honouree to be chosen by GCTC’s artistic committee for a “GCTC Award for Theatrical Excellence”. We couldn’t be happier or prouder that the first honouree is Hannah Moscovitch."

My husband picked a winner this year when he gave me a plaque behind a GCTC seat for Christmas. I was thrilled. It was one of those gifts that gives on different levels. I’ve loved GCTC for years, and had fun volunteering in the early days, back at the old Gladstone building. I liked the idea of channelling some holiday spending in GCTC’s general direction.

Then came the hard part. What to put on the plaque? And which seat? I thought I should really come up with some kind of prophetic quote. I patted Casta, my beloved 12-year old dog, and wracked my brain. Nothing. Then I thought, why not her? Time is running out for Casta, so why not immortalize her unwavering love and loyalty on the plaque?
