Support

Your support creates stories full of heart with powerful performances for everyone in our city to enjoy. The stories told from our stage are your stories…

At GCTC we believe in the importance of the Canadian voice. Your support tells us that you share that belief.

Back in 1975, the founders of GCTC were part of a cultural nationalist movement happening across the country. They wanted Canadian stories and our history to be heard in our universities, in our theatres, in our literature.

They wanted to build a community – that gathered people like you, who believed as they did, in the importance of Canadian identity and experiences. They achieved all that and more: GCTC has made a significant mark locally and nationally in the development of Canadian plays, playwrights, artists and cultural workers.

Our mandate and governing values continue to reflect the strength of their influence;  the community they built continues to grow today, and we are all a part of it.

Your support produces plays….

In 35 years, your support has produced over 220 professional English language plays, some 80 of them newly commissioned and developed works launched onto the Canadian and world stage. We translate plays for first time production in English; feature productions from other parts of Canada and even mount international productions of particular interest, earning many awards in the process! These plays entertain and inspire 30,000 audience members annually, have introduced 10,000 students to theatre through the education program and launched innumerable careers in the dramatic arts.

Your support builds a professional arts community in our city

GCTC believes in sharing knowledge and developing the skills of those interested in a professional career in the performing arts. We have developed numerous  programs to facilitate learning for artists and writers.

Emerging and established writers have the opportunity to hone their skills through the Playmaker’s Society (established playwrights develop a new play under the guidance of an seasoned playwright; InFlux  (playwriting mentorship for emerging writers between the ages of 18-25); and U think (story writing mentorship for youth ages 13-18).

For those interested in a career in acting, directing, and dramaturgy we host a number of programs for learning in all aspects of producing theatre:  The Production Mentorship Program (2007 – 2009) provided professional mentorship for emerging, independent Ottawa theatre companies; The Director’s Unit provides professional development for local theatre directors. We also conduct Master classes for Ottawa artists and regularly have internships and assistant directorships.
And finally, GCTC is a third-party recommender for The Ontario Arts Council’s Theatre Creators’ Reserve Program, assisting playwrights and informal collectives to create new work for the stage

Your support puts cutting edge theatre within everyone’s reach

With your support we are able to make the theatre experience accessible to everyone with Pay-what-you-can Sundays, student and senior pricing, rush seats and group rates.  Your support is invaluable in our education programs: we commission study guides for teachers to use with their students when attending a play, and then host talk backs with the artists for the students as well as for the general public.

Your support strengthens the Ottawa community…..

As a non profit charitable organization, we understand the importance of supporting Ottawa’s charitable community. We are proud of our community giving program that helps other not-for-profits in their own fundraising efforts.

Your support builds a strong theatre community.
