STUART KINMOND IS FIRST VISUAL ARTIST FEATURED AT THE IRVING GREENBERG THEATRE CENTRE’S NEW LORRAINE ‘FRITZI’ YALE GALLERY
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - Thursday, October 11, 2007
Curator Don Monet, of Cube Gallery, has asked visual artists to interpret each of the Great Canadian Theatre Company's plays in this inaugural season at its new home, the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre. The first play, The Man from the Capital, inspired the artwork of Stuart Kinmond, the first visual artist featured at the Lorraine ‘Fritzi’ Yale Gallery through to October 28th.
“Enjoy this--our first--visual arts show in GCTC’s season that will explore the idea of directly pairing fine art with fine theatre,” says Monet. “Montreal native and former practicing architect, Stuart Kinmond is now a full-time visual artist working with paint and mixed media at his Ottawa studio. His art begins where architecture ends, through an unusual and oft times amusing exploration of how his memory and experience inform perception of scenes from everyday life.”
Kinmond says, "In creating a series of paintings to accompany The Man from the Capital, I hope to poke fun at the stuffy reserve of the city and, more particularly, its pompous senior bureaucrats and politicians. Some of my works depict the hurly-burly comings and goings of our platoons of civil servants; others provide a lighthearted and freewheeling tribute to our amazingly picturesque city, with its romantic Parliament buildings, splendid waterways, and pomp and parades.” The art works in this show are for sale; contact the Cube Gallery at (613) 728-1750.
The Man from the Capital, the play that inspired Kinmond, written by Colin Heath with music by John Millard, is a Canadian musical adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's hilarious farce about a corrupt municipal government, The Government Inspector. The show’s production partner is Scotiabank Group; the play’s run is October 9 – 28, 2007. Jennifer Brewin directs the company in this, the largest production for GCTC, now in its 33rd season.
The Lorraine ‘Fritzi’ Yale Gallery is located on the second floor of the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre at 1233 Wellington Street West (at Holland Avenue), Ottawa. Entrance is free. The ‘Fritzi’ is open during GCTC Box Office Hours during performance weeks, Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 12 noon to 4 p.m., and during non performance weeks, Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 12 noon to 4 p.m.
The 'Fritzi' is proud to be a part of this year's ArtBus on Saturday, October 13, hosted by the Ottawa School of Arts; visit http://www.artottawa.ca/ for further information.
