IN FULL:
The Great Canadian Theatre Company’s events bidding fond farewell to its home of 25 years have begun in earnest. If last night’s live Acoustic Waves Last Round Concert, produced by the Ottawa Folk Festival for broadcast nationally and locally by CBC radio, is any indication of the interest and nostalgic connection that Ottawa has for GCTC, then June 17’s Farewell to 910 Gladstone celebrations will be not-to-miss events, and very memorable.
On this celebratory note, Mark Sutcliffe, Chair of GCTC’s board of directors, warmly invites the public to attend the final farewell to 910 Gladstone events on Sunday, June 17 - an Open House & Tours in the afternoon and an evening Party. “The Farewell to 910 Gladstone events honour the spirit and tenacity of the artists and others that got GCTC to where it is today. The renovated garage at 910 Gladstone has served its community of artists and Ottawa’s residents well. So, before moving from the heart of Little Italy to our new state-of-the-art home in the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, a Gold-Leed certified building in Hintonburg, Wellington Street West District, it is time to pay homage to a space that was filled not just with great Canadian theatre but with great memories too.”
Artifacts, set designs, photographs, and clippings from the public and the theatre’s extensive archives will be on display during the Open House & Guided Tours from 3 – 5 p.m. The theatre will be open for farewell tours by people who have stories to tell about every nook and cranny of the theatre. Posters and production photos, such as those from the first show of GCTC in its home at 910 Gladstone, Sandinista!, shows over the next three decades, including those from its final show this past May 2007, Helen’s Necklace, are being exhibited. Everyone is welcome to drop by. No reservation is required.
The goodbye Party is at 7 p.m., with a show starting at 8 p.m., featuring Master of Ceremonies Kate Hurman with Mary Ellis, Todd Duckworth, Jeff Lawson, Michael Mancini, Sarah McVie, Ben Meuser, Maureen Smith, Bev Wolfe, Ian Tamblyn, Three Sheets to the Wind and more. This look back at the many years of “Ottawa’s own professional theatre” will include excerpts of GCTC shows and a presentation of memories collected from founding members, audience members, actors, former and current staff and board members. Everyone is welcome to phone (613) 236-5196 to reserve one of the limited seats, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
GCTC’s General Manager Nancy Oakley is a co-chair of the Farewell to 910 Committee. “We are celebrating the vision and unstoppable determination of the founders to have a theatre company dedicated to Canadian stories. The festivities also mark a moment in the history of a theatre company as it continues on its exciting path of providing contemporary Canadian work to audiences. We are very proud of GCTC’s roots and where it is headed.” Joining her to organize the events is co-chair Kate Hurman, Kim Pinard, Laine Johnson, Lise Kemp, Mary Ellis, Beverly Wolfe, Maureen Smith, Wendy Rockburn, Laurie Koensgen, Doug Campbell, Kate Wright, Barry Caplan, Lisa Twardowska, Michael Cliff, Barbara Dundass and Beth Monaco.
Festivities will provide a final chance for visitors to meet and mingle with the Company’s artists, founding members and ardent supporters. Admission is free to attend the events. Donations to GCTC, a non-profit registered charity, will be welcomed and appreciated; proceeds will go toward the theatre’s play development program. For further information, call (613) 236-5196 or visit www.gctc.ca.

PSA Ottawa, ON – Friday, April 20, 2007
GCTC’s Farewell to 910 Gladstone Committee is looking for anecdotes, testimonials, poems, memories or anything the public would like to share about the Great Canadian Theatre Company. It could be a performer’s best or worst moments on stage, it could be an unforgettable moment as an audience member or a person’s favourite play. This is an opportunity to say good-bye to the building as GCTC’s volunteer committee gather together the memories for a salute to the remarkable 25 years of plays staged at 910 Gladstone. Memories and stories may be sent via e-mail to Mary Ellis by May 7 [deadline extended to May 30] to ellism@magma.ca. On June 17, GCTC will be hosting the Farewell to 910 Gladstone Party and everyone is invited to attend. For further information, the public is welcome to call GCTC at (613) 236-5196.
