New Theatre of Ottawa in Association with GCTC Presents: St. Nicholas by Conor McPherson directed by Martin Conboy

"I was the educated friend of the masses, ...protecting them from these artistic charlatans who were trying to rob their money..But all that changed when I met..the vampires."

- St. Nicholas

The New Theatre of Ottawa is proud to present, in association with the Great Canadian Theatre Company St. Nicholas by Connor McPherson from February 20-March 2, 2002 at GCTC.

The play is directed by Martin Conboy and performed by John Koensgen. Authentically Irish in its dark humour, St. Nicholas is a riveting account of one man's quest for meaning and absolution in a world distorted by his own ruthless self-destruction. The Playwright challenges his audience to decide where truth ends and storytelling begins in this tale of a Theatre Critic who writes his last damning review and then falls into a world of dark secrets, vampires and mystery.

Director, Martin Conboy, grew up in Ireland and was captivated by the Irish tradition of storytelling. Often those stories told of macabre journeys and unexplained happenings leaving the listener wondering. Not wanting to believe but afraid not to. Mr. McPherson, in his writing has transposed those stories into the modern genre of theatre. "I am fascinated by his work because he takes an old tradition and makes us believe we are seeing a new form" stated Mr. Conboy. "He takes theatre forward by going back to its origins."

Award winning playwright Conor McPherson was born in 1971. He attended University College Dublin, where he began to write and direct and co-founded the Fly by Night Theatre Company, which performed new plays in Dublin's fringe venues. Mr. McPherson's plays include St. Nicholas and The Weir as well as Port Authority, Dublin Carol, This Lime Tree Bower and many others.

St Nicholas runs from February 20 to March 2, 2002. Showtime is 8 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Tickets are $17 general admission and $15 for students and seniors.
