Hollywood Versus Rural Ireland - Who will Win? Stones In His Pockets Comes To GCTC
Ottawa, ON, Nov 10, 2005 – Stones In His Pockets opens at the Great Canadian Theatre Company on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 8:00 pm. Previews from November 22, 2005.
The fun begins when Hollywood descends on an Irish village, and two locals are hired on as extras. Charlie and Jake find themselves in a world of self-important directors, ladder-climbing assistants and petulant actors. It’s all fun and games until a sudden event forces Charlie and Jake back to reality, to assess their lives and reconsider their Hollywood dreams. Hilarious, touching and inspiring, Stones in his Pockets is an ironic look at public ambitions and secret passions.
Stones in his Pockets is also about the difference between theatre and film. Every one of more than 15 characters — stars and extras, crew and townsfolk — are played by two actors. Try that in a movie!
Stones in his Pockets has played to rave reviews around the world, and has won the London Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy; the Olivier Award; the 1999 Irish Times Irish Theatre Award for Best Production and Best Actor; and the Special Achievement Award from the Outer Critics Circle in New York. Playwright Marie Jones earned the John Hewitt Award for “contribution to the cultural traditions debate.”
Stones in his Pockets recently celebrated a fourth incredible year in London’s West End, and has been performed in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Austria, Canada, Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Turkey, Italy, South Africa and the United States.
According to the BBC’s Vanessa Cuddeford, Stones in his Pockets is “A comedy on several layers — overtly funny at times, self-reflexive at others, poignant and touching throughout. A must see!”
This acting tour-de-force stars Ottawa’s own Pierre Brault (No Great Mischief, Blood On The Moon and Portrait of an Unidentified Man) and Stratford regular Jonathan Goad (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Fiddler on the Roof and As You Like It).
Stones in his Pockets is directed by Dennis Fitzgerald; set and costume design by Art Penson; lighting design by Jock Munro.
Stones in his Pockets previews November 22 and 23, opens Thursday, November 24, and runs until December 11.
