GCTC World Premiere of The Fall, a Gripping Political Thriller, to Open GCTC’s 2006 – 2007 Lineup
Ottawa, ON, August 24, 2006: The Fall opens at the Great Canadian Theatre Company on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at 8:00 pm. Preview performances are on Tuesday, September 5 and Wednesday, September 6.
Marking the opening of Artistic Director Lise Ann Johnson’s first season, The Fall by Canadian playwright Greg Nelson, kicks off a season that looks at societies in transition. Set in Ottawa, this brand new play takes place at the Department of Justice where our country’s legal and political worlds intersect. The Fall revolves around a pivotal choice made a fictional Supreme Court Judge named Harry McKay. Officially, Harry McKay was a great man: leading intellectual, activist judge, Canadian hero. He practically composed the Charter. But the unofficial version –the truth- is much darker. Inside a nameless box, in a nameless room, in a government basement… is a file. Inside this file is a startling secret. And now, Harry’s estranged son must come to terms with his father’s chilling past.
The Fall is a timely look at the importance of the ideals behind the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As we approach the 25th Anniversary of the Charter, the play challenges our national self-image and asks if individual rights can be sacrificed for the collective good. ”As Canadians, we believe in peace-keeping, human rights, equality, health care, etc” says playwright Greg Nelson. “We seem to see ourselves as a fundamentally decent and morally superior country. What if we aren’t? What if we’re just like everyone else?”
Greg Nelson’s stage plays have been produced in theatres across the country. He is the author of numerous radio plays for CBC, including the popular and award-winning comedies, "The Dudley Chronicles." His work in television includes a season on the CTV legal drama "The Associates."
The Fall is directed by the acclaimed director Eda Holmes, who has directed numerous productions at Shaw, Tarragon, CanStage and Harbourfront. Her direction of Little Mercy’s First Murder at the Tarragon Theatre snagged a Dora Mavor-Moore Award for Best Direction
