GCTC and Tarragon Theatre present the World Premiere of Stephen Massicotte’s The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion.

Ottawa, ON, September 29, 2006:  The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion opens at the Great Canadian Theatre Company on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 8:00 pm. Preview performances are on Tuesday, October 10 and Wednesday, October 11.

GCTC is proud to present the World Premiere of The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion by Stephen Massicotte, the celebrated author of Mary’s Wedding. Produced jointly with the Tarragon Theatre, this brand new play is a timely look at one of the 20th Century’s greatest icons: Lawrence of Arabia. War hero, media star, expert in terrorist warfare and champion of Arab sovereignty, Lawrence of Arabia’s story resonates with historical hindsight.

Set in Oxford following the Great War, The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion charts the friendship between Lawrence and war poet Robert Graves. Armed with a talent for practical jokes, the two soldier-poets revolt and lay siege to the sleepy university town. As their tongue-in-cheek movement gains momentum, the authorities take notice. The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion brings the Arab Revolt dangerously close to the heart of the Empire.

This production features a powerhouse cast, including Tom Rooney as Lawrence of Arabia and Jonathan Crombie as Robert Graves. Tom Rooney is known for his star turn in Hamlet at the National Arts Centre and as David Kaye in CBC’s This is Wonderland. Jonathan Crombie has appeared in numerous productions across Canada, and is fondly remembered by many as Gilbert Blythe in CBC’s Anne of Green Gables.

This production features Ottawa’s own Paul Rainville, audience favourite Victor Ertmanis and the very talented Michelle Giroux. The production is directed by Richard Rose who returns to GCTC following last year’s smash hit No Great Mischief. Set and Costumes are by Charlotte Dean. Lighting is designed by Graeme S. Thomson. Sound is designed by Todd Charleton. Our Stage Manager is Kathryn Westoll. Our Apprentice Stage Manager is Tara Tomlinson.

Following the production’s run at the Great Canadian Theatre Company, The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion will run at to Tarragon Theatre in Toronto from November 7 to December 17.

The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion previews October 10 and 11, opens Thursday, October 12, and runs until October 29.
