A Beautiful View written and directed by Daniel MacIvor

Ottawa, ON, Apr 4, 2006 – A Beautiful View opens at the Great Canadian Theatre Company on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 8:00 pm. Preview on Wednesday, April 19.

After the critical success of Cul de Sac last June during the Magnetic North Theatre Festivalda da kamera returns to Ottawa with the Canadian Premiere of Daniel MacIvor’s latest play, A Beautiful View. Having won the OBIE award, the GLAAD award, the Chalmer’s award, as well as a host of others, da da kamera spearheads the cutting edge of English theatre in Canada.

GCTC is proud to present the Canadian premiere of A Beautiful View, hot on the heels of the play’s triumphant debut at the Wexner Centre for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. Writer/director Daniel MacIvor describes the play as “a play about joy and misery, confusion and clarity, how nothing ever changes and how one moment can alter the whole world. In short, it is a play about love. A Beautiful View plays out the story of the relationship between two women, Michelle and Liz, how they came together and split up in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, discovering that it’s impossible to let go of something that’s holding onto you.”

da da kamera is a force to be reckoned with in the Canadian theatrical scene. Founded in 1986 as a production company for new theatre, da da kamera (translates into: “yes, yes to the small room”) is the partnership of Daniel MacIvor (director) and Sherrie Johnson (producer). The company focuses on creation, placing no limits on the time it takes for a project’s development. In their process, they reject the decorative and formulaic in a quest to develop a clear and simple exchange of energy between the performer and the audience. Since the company’s formation it has created more than a dozen original productions, several of which have received international awards.

Daniel MacIvor’s other works include Somewhere I have Never TravelledYes I am And Who Are You?See Bob RunWild AbandonThis Is A Play2-2 TangoThe Soldier DreamsMarion BridgeYou Are Here and In On It, which won a Village Voice OBIE Award after being presented in New York City in 2001. With long-time collaborator Daniel Brooks, he has created The Lorca PlayHouseHere Lies Henry and Monster, which traveled throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe, Israel and Australia. Also a filmmaker, Daniel’s selected film credits include writing the award-winning short film The Fairy Who Didn’t Want to be a Fairy Anymore, and Sydney That Summer. Daniel’s film Wilby Wonderful was nominated for a Genie award and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2004 and went on to screen at festivals around the world, including in competition at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain.

The production features two acclaimed actresses. Caroline Gillis has been seen in previous MacIvor plays including Never Swim Alone, This is a Play, The Soldier Dreams, Jump and most recently, You Are Here.  Tracy Wright is a founding member of the experimental theatre group, The Augusta Co. and has worked with Jacob Wren on several productions including the PME showIts Easy to Criticize.
