The Journey

All 8 members of BLAKDENIM take to a brightly lit stage. They play trumpets, bass, guitar, and feature two vocalists.

The Journey is a performance art presentation created and performed by Origin Arts owners Jacqui Du Toit, Captain and JustJamaal ThePoet.

It weaves storytelling, Spoken Word poetry and Hip Hop; and speaks to humanity as we walk our collective paths that lead us out of darkness and into the light. This stage show is one hour and is suitable for families.

Join Captain, Jacqui and JustJamaal at 8pm on Saturday, April 24 for a curated evening of international storytelling and eclectic rhythm and poetry.

Captain

Captain the M.C., poet, producer, screenwriter, Hip-Hop historian and teacher has been a mainstay on the Hip-Hop music scene in Ottawa since 1988. Hailing from Toronto but now calls Ottawa home, he quickly aligned himself with those who were like minded and at the forefront of the culture. He grew up in the inner city of Toronto's many housing projects and immersed himself in the blossoming culture of Rhyme, B-Boy, Graffiti, DJ, Production, Street Fashion that helped shaped the person that you see/hear today. Since moving to Ottawa, he’s worked with and been a part of many groups such as, DJ Ben Jam, DJ Rude Boy, DJ Richniques, 2Hype, Ground Control, New Tower of Power, Beyond Soul, B.O.L.D. In his heyday, Captain has opened up for many of Hip-Hop greats such as Maestro, Dream Warriors, Shinehead, De La Soul, Dead Prez just to name a few. In 1999 he released his debut album ‘Story of a B.O.L.D.’ When music was not his main focus, he added concert promoter to his repertoire, along with creating an innovative dvd/print magazine that provided a platform to showcase, promote and document particularly Canadian artists. Aside from being co-owner of The Origin, in 2015 Captain along with Cleavon Langott created Soul City Music Fest, an annual arts festival dedicated to giving a stage that Ottawa artists can perform on. Captain’s main goal is to tell true authentic stories from an African Canadian perspective. Regardless of the artistic medium, he has never strayed far from his roots, which is Hip-Hop. With a real message to the urban youth of today through music, his music is informative, preventive and so truthful that Canada needs to hear the 1st hand account of someone who has lived it, done it and is always ready to tell his story. Undiluted, uncompromising, rough, rugged and raw, Captain does not do art, he is art!
