The 40th Anniversary Playwriting contest is now closed and we are pleased to announce the winners. We received many exciting submissions and were wowed by the diverse ways these new voices interpreted the lines of inspiration, drawn from GCTC's history of past productions. Artists and educators Mary Ellis, Laurie Koensgen, and Kristina Watt and I pored over the short plays and had a lively debate about each of their merits.

Here I am beginning the third week of rehearsals for The Best Brothers by Daniel MacIvor. This play is HILARIOUS, and so intricately written.  "Bunny" Best has become my new prophetess.  She affects me in my daily life now as I go to The Table Vegetarian Restaurant EVERY lunch and philosophize the meaning of life over delicious desserts.

This season, to celebrate GCTC's 40-year history of producing great Canadian plays, we decided to hold a playwriting contest.

The idea came up at the GCTC's 40th Anniversary Committee. This hard-working group of volunteers were brainstorming ideas about how to recognize the company's remarkable past and connect these memories with an exciting future to come.

This past week I had the delight of hanging a new exhibit at the Fritzi Gallery. We opened a new group exhibit titled Birds of a Feather and are very happy to say this exhibit is part of TD Canada Trust’s Then and Now Series for Black History Month. The exhibition features 10 of our own local artists, showcasing their recent work from 2014.

Happy New Year! Another year has gone by and a new one is on its roll, full of new hopes and new beginnings, new challenges and new achievements, and... a new Lawyer Play! Hard to believe how quickly the time went by since the last Lawyer Play. Seems like not too long ago we wrapped up the season and here we are again, at the foot of the mountain, ready to start the ball rolling on the next lawyer play adventure. It's a never-ending cycle of hard work, excitement build-up, gratitude and fun.

Managing Director
Hugh Neilson's picture

It has been a month since I started at GCTC as the new Managing Director and I have to first start off by acknowledging the very warm and supportive welcome I have received from everyone. It has been wonderful meeting so many new faces. It has also been very rewarding reconnecting with names and friends from a past and a time when GCTC was playing an integral role for me as an emerging theatre artist and practitioner in the early 1980s.

Illustration has always been one of my favourite genres of art! It is the primary basis and the starting point for most if not all artwork in any different mediums. An illustration depicts something seen, remembered or imagined through a drawing, sketch, painting, photograph, or other graphical representation. The word illustrate comes from the Latin illustro, “to enlighten.” There are many ways to illustrate a story.

Leave it to A Company of Fools to bring out the crowds for an opening night. I’m pretty sure the entire Ottawa theatre community was in the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre last night. And why not? A Company of Fools is an institution in Ottawa’s theatre community and when you’re that kind of an organization, you tend to make a lot of friends. And all those friends showed up last night to witness the world premiere of Pomme and ‘Restes: SHIPWRECKED! On the Tempestuous Lost Island of Never.
