So many plays, so little time

This time of year is all about renewal. The days get longer, the temperatures get milder and Ottawans come out of hibernation to enjoy patios, festivals and great Canadian theatre.

Learning about the state of Canadian theatre — and our local theatre community —  has been a huge part of my Metcalf Foundation-funded internship so far. Over the past 2 months, I’ve been organizing, programming, attending, supporting, recommending and championing almost everything GCTC touches, while soaking up as much insight and knowledge as I can about the ins and outs of artistic direction. Eric, and the entire GCTC staff, have been really generous of their time and knowledge. It’s really hard to believe there are only 10 months left!

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most is having the chance to meet so many local artists and playwrights through opening nights, the undercurrents festival and even the playwrights unit. I always knew this city was ripe with artistic talent, but now I have a better understanding of the many ways GCTC provides artists, directors and playwrights opportunities to flourish.

And I’ve never in my life read SO MANY PLAYS in such a short amount of time! Plays for the current season, plays for next season, plays by emerging playwrights, plays for funding consideration … piles of wonderful, exciting stories that are all ready to be discovered.  That's a part that I really love.

I look forward to sharing more about this internship experience in the months ahead. Until then, I’ll see you at the 40th anniversary season launch on April 8th!
