Once again, Ottawa’s legal community has joined forces with the GCTC to present the Annual Lawyer Play. Twenty-six lawyers have been cast in The Mouse That Roared, a delightful heart-warming comedy that promises to be one of our best.
The cast includes lawyers from private practice and the public sector with a range of experience from those at the beginning of their careers to some of the most senior. Recently appointed Justice Peter Doody is also back with us this year in one of his most hilarious roles yet.
The lawyers, who donate their time, have spent weeks in rehearsals with Director Geoff McBride and Stage Manager Erin Finn. The set has been built, costumes created, lines and blocking learned and we have moved into the main theatre to polish all the work of the last few months and get ready for opening night. It is tremendously exciting to see what the tech crew has come up with to support our efforts this year.
Tickets have sold well to this year’s play; better than ever before. While there are still tickets to get for all of the gala performances on June 2, 3 and 4, we are hoping to sell out at least some of these shows. Our preview on June 1 sold out weeks ago.
More than ever before, it’s clear that the broader local community, and by that I mean not just lawyers, want to come out to support this event. It has become an Ottawa “happening” every spring.
Theatre audiences know that this is a chance to see a large cast, professionally directed and supported in every way – increasingly a rarity in theatre. And it should come as no surprise, that with a little management, lawyers can act and can even take direction!
Many in our audience are loyal supporters of our efforts, coming back year after year. I am often asked about the play and what we are planning by theatre enthusiasts months ahead of tickets being available.
Do join us and spread the word! We want to sell out this show!
